After having an Asus Eee Net book for about a month I have the following thoughts on it. When the net books first came out I thought it would be a cool computer to have around, but found it hard to justify the cost of yet another computer that I didn't really need. Amazing how we geeks have a hard time differentiating need from want. My good friend and fellow Geek member Rick solved that problem by sending me one as a gift. Something that I truly appreciated. The model I have and am reviewing is the PC900HA with the following specs.
Intel Atom 1.6GB processor
1 GB DDR2 Ram (I updated mine to 2 GB for under $20)
160 GB sata hard drive.
I've used this net book on the home computer desk as well as around the house and on the road in the truck. It came loaded with Windows XP. I love Ubuntu and may eventually dual boot it. But for now I'll stick with Windows XP which runs extremely fast on this little box. I've done all the usual applications on it, ie: email, web browing,, chat, skype phone etc. If using it on the home computer desk for any involved typing, I find plugging an external keyboard in a good relief from the somewhat small keyboard. I've also noted some applications lend themselves to the smaller screen than others. For example I've found ice chat easier to read than Mirc or Pirch.
I love having it with me traveling. I considered getting a nationwide wireless card, but I split my time between our Michigan home and our Toronto home and a US card won't work in Canada and vice versa. So I rely on finding an open wifi connection. Fortunately in the areas of both of our homes I never have to look over 5 minutes to find a hot spot. Having a full Skype phone account makes it a good mobile phone that works in both countries.
Overall I would say it's a good secondary computer. For the price you get a whole lot of computer that is extremely portable and has a good battery life.
